Parlando di performance, la Formula 1 è un esempio chiarificatore. E non perché lì si corra forte! Il fatto che la qualità di quello che si fa dipenda, in generale, da una serie di parametri, ci appare ovvio. Ma la Formula 1 rende evidente, forse più di ogni altra attività professionale al mondo, anche a chi la guardi dal di fuori, che la migliore performance si ottiene bilanciando i parametri in gioco, e non semplicemente massimizzandoli. Cioè, con la Formula 1 tutti capiamo che massimizzare un parametro può andare a discapito di altri, e che l’optimum sta – etimologicamente – nell’ottimizzazione (e non necessariamente nel mezzo, come certi frigidi bigotti cercano di inculcarci da sempre).

The formula 1 is an excellent example of performance, and not because of its high speed! It’s obvious to most that the quality of an activity depends, generally, on a series of parameters. The formula 1, however, more than any other professional activity in the world, shows even those who watch from the outside that the best performance is obtained by balancing these parameters, and not simply by maximizing them. That is, with Formula 1, it is understood that one maximizes a parameter to the detriment of others, and that the optimum is, etymologically, in the optimization (and not necessarily in the balance as certain bigots have always tried to instill in us).

Wenn man von Performance spricht, ist die Formel 1 ein klärendes Beispiel. Und nicht, weil dort Gas gegeben wird!

Der Fakt, dass die Qualität dessen, was man macht, generell von einer Reihe von Parametern abhängt, erscheint uns offensichtlich. Aber die Formel 1 macht, vielleicht mehr als jede andere professionelle Tätigkeit der Welt, auch für den, der sie von außen betrachtet, erkenntlich, dass die bestmögliche Performance durch ein spielerisches Ausbalancieren der Parameter erreicht wird und nicht einfach nur dadurch, dass man sie maximiert. Das heißt also, bei der Formel 1 verstehen wir alle, dass die Maximierung eines Parameters sich zum Nachteil eines anderen auswirken kann, und dass das Optimum – schon sprachgeschichtlich erkennbar – in der Optimierung liegt (und nicht unbedingt im Mittel, wie gewisse frigide Heuchler uns seit jeher weismachen wollen).
